“Hear comes the Sun…”
Yes it’s here! Summer has arrived and here is another little ray of sunshine to brighten up your day – The CSC quarterly bulletin!

Message from the Chair

It is a huge honour for me to provide this update to cover the first quarter of my tenure of this great club. I became the third Authorised Engineer (Decontamination) to become chair of the CSC, following two people who are legends of both the club and the AE(D) fraternity, Peter Hooper and Wayne Spencer, and as such the honour is not only for myself, but for our profession as well.
The Club look forward to building on the great work put forward by my predecessor, Jimmy Walker, but also the other great committee members who have served recently and throughout the club’s history. It is the intention of the current committee to respect the history, while also exploring innovations, that will retain the club’s position at the top table of associations allied to decontamination and infection control.
The excitement will start at the forthcoming study day, where along with our new Event management partners, we will embrace new methods to ensure the smooth operation of the event. We will encourage audience involvement and debate at the event and hopefully we learn together. It is my recollection as a fledgling attendee, that our events were always a point of audience discussion and as such we learn so much from that involvement.
The club have several projects ongoing and this newsletter updates on a number of those, however we are keen to learn what you want as members. We welcome feedback on what we need to deliver, both in events and in publications. As members, both personal and corporate, we can only respond, if we know your thoughts, do not hesitate to feedback on web site, social media or alternatively let the committee know through old-fashioned discussion.
We are open to all ideas and will endeavour to ensure that as members, you receive full value for your membership.
We look forward to seeing you all at our study day in Birmingham this October, as always, the agenda is varied, thought provoking and is going to be engaging.
Many Thanks

CSC Activities
No sooner had the Annual Scientific Meeting come and gone the CSC committee were working hard on pulling together the programme for the Autumn Study Day 2024. This will continue to be updated with speaker profiles so please keep coming back to check.
With the new pressures on healthcare providers and a world of competing priorities, the theme of the day is “ The Generation Game.” We’ll be looking back in the rear view mirror to see what lessons have been learnt and can still be learned from the past. Then how we take these lessons into the future to explore how we can integrate the sustainability agenda while maintaining patient safety. All these activities require competent staff and we round the day off with considering and discussing what creates behaviour change and how are we going to implement the recommendation from the NHS Estates Technical Bulletin regarding the competency base framework for staff working in decontamination departments.
We plan for the day to be interactive in real time, with the intention to encourage sharing of thoughts and an open discussion around all the topics because often the best feedback comes at that moment in time, before all the other distractions that overtake our daily lives!
If you weren’t able to attend the April 24 Annual Scientific Meeting in Gerrards Cross, you can now purchase access to either individual recordings or the whole Day 1 / Day 2 recordings by going to our Shop page.
If you did attend the meeting and would like access to the recordings please contact Becky at [email protected]
What we’ve been watching & listening to

The connectedness of everything is increasingly apparent, not least of which is the impact that water in healthcare is now seen to be having across the built environment. Dr Jon Otter and Dr Phil Norville have got together to collaborate on the ‘IPC Journal Club’ hosted by IPC Partners, with the intention to review published study’s in the Journal of Hospital Infection. Their first club meeting discussed this study (full access to the paper if free to JIP &HIS members) on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, wastewater, and transmission.
Sadly the recording of the webinar is no longer available however, there is a schedule for their webinar series and if you’d like to register for their next free webinar you can do so here.
IPC Partners is a collaborative of experts providing IPC solutions for healthcare providers and corporates.
What we’ve been reading
Here’s an interesting paper highlighting the conflict between the Spaulding classification and medical device cleaning requirements, providing the first description and recommendation of a new ‘cleaning classification’ system to be used in conjunction with the Spaulding classification.
