The Principal Decontamination Engineer working within the specialist team at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership/Specialist Estates Services. His role is dedicated to all aspects of decontamination/reprocessing techniques of medical devices. John is a member of a team that provides validation services, advice and guidance to Health Boards/Trusts within Wales and works closely with Welsh governmental departments to deliver policy and strategy in this unique and often complex field.

John has worked within the NHS in Wales for the past 35 years.

In 2012 John completed the ACIST course (qualifying course for Authorised Engineer – Decontamination) and was formally accepted onto the IHEEM register as an Authorised Engineer (Decontamination) late 2013.

He was a member and Officer of the CSC committee between 2011 and 2022, recently taking up the position of Chair in April 2024.

Declan Diver is the Professor of Plasma Physics at the School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Glasgow. His research spans plasma phenomena across a wide range of energy regimes, from low-temperature applications to fusion and astrophysics.

Low temperature, imperfectly ionized plasmas are concerned with non-equilibrium contexts in which plasma chemistry plays a major role: this is because the abundance of free electrons in the plasma component can enhance or create chemical pathways that would normally be inaccessible under conventional thermodynamics, leading to a rich complexity of behaviours.

Higher energy plasmas, including extreme radiation activity, require that the charged particle dynamics is integrated into the electromagnetic response of the medium overall, leading to non-fluid instabilities and even particle creation from light.

Declan Diver is a fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society; he has an abiding interest in healthcare applications of ozone, and is co-founder of a university spin-out company Glanadair, which is the commercialisation vehicle for such applications. Glanadair has several healthcare technologies in development, with the most developed being a device for delivering ozone to clinical sinks to reduce the aerosolization threat from hospital drains.

In addition to research, Diver has been external examiner in many institutions, and participated in multiple UKRI panels.

Dr Susanne Surman-Lee is an independent Consultant Clinical Scientist, Public Health Microbiologist, and Director of Leegionella Ltd in the United Kingdom. She has more than 40 years’ experience in clinical and environmental microbiology and is internationally recognised for her expertise in healthcare water safety and the prevention of infections caused by waterborne pathogens, including Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

She has led numerous national and international outbreak investigations and has contributed to the development of national and international guidance and standards, including World Health Organization publications on Legionella and water safety in buildings.

Lena Cordie-Bancroft has over 20 years of global quality and regulatory experience in the MedTech industry, covering medical devices and in vitro diagnostics. She has held leadershiproles across ISO, CEN, BSI, and AAMI standards committees and is a frequent speaker and workshop facilitator at international regulatory and medical device conferences.

Lena is currently Global Standards Advisor at Medtronic, where she champions the consistent management, implementation and application of standards to ensure regulatory compliance and oranizational efficiencies. She works with industry and regulators to address standardization challenges and supports Medtronic’s global engagement in standards development.

Anthony began his career in sterile services in 1998 at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, working as an agency staff member during school holidays and delivering soft packs to wards across the hospital. After completing his A levels, he moved into a full-time role and received training in the wash area. In 2002, he pursued his ambition to work as a flight attendant, joining a low-fares airline operating from Stansted Airport. After six years in aviation, he returned to sterile services as a full-time assistant at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow. Over the past 18 years at Princess Alexandra Hospital, he has progressed from Sterile Services Assistant to Supervisor and now holds the position of Sterile Services Manager. He also completed a Foundation Degree in Decontamination Sciences in 2018.

Outside of his professional role, he maintains a strong interest in Formula 1 and motorsport. He volunteers regularly as a motorsport marshal, typically at least one weekend each month, and has been selected on several occasions to marshal at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
