At the end of the course the candidates should have a good understanding on the working of the department including when and why testing is done and the risks and responsibilities within decontamination. At the end of the course there is an examination that must be passed to attain the qualification, the course is 12 months duration. 4. Healthcare Science associate level 4 15 —This programme builds on the knowledge gained from the IDSc Technical Certificate and is designed for experienced supervisors or newly appointed management working within the department. It covers the risks associated with the decontamination process, legislation, guidance and the interpretation of reports and interpreting and reflecting the standards into the departmental quality system. The course takes between 18 and 24 months to complete. The candidate works through a mixture of generic healthcare science modules in addition to ones focused on decontamination. This is a portfolio and work-based course with an EPA at the end.

The IDSc is working with the relevant organisations to ensure that higher level apprenticeships (level 6-8) are available in the near future 16 .

In all the training programmes it is essential that all students have a technically competent in-house mentor or independent training advisor to support them throughout the program.
